Building strong legs is very important to anyone who is into bodybuilding. You are not a true bodybuilder if you do not have strong legs. There are so many people you see at the gym who spend so much time on the upper body that their lower body looks like twigs. You do not want to be that bodybuilder but instead you want a body that is in balance and that means that your upper body and lower body must both be well developed. It doesn’t matter if you are a bodybuilder or someone who lifts weights to look good because you have to take care of both ends of your body.
The best way to put mass on your quads is to learn how to squat. Learn how to do a proper deep squat which might take you a while to develop but once you do you will receive so many benefits. One of the powers of squatting is that it truly works the central nervous system and releases a lot of growth hormone and dopamine. Basically it makes you feel good and it makes other workout movements more powerful and you will be able to lift more weight.
Beyond squats there are different variations of quad based exercises that will work great for you. One is the leg press. We’ve all seen the leg press machine it is basically a sled with a bar with weights on both ends of it. You sit in the machine and you press upward with your legs. People are able to press a lot of weight during this exercise. One caveat is that you need to be careful because it can strain your lower back if you’re not careful but it is a great additional way to lift weights.
Quad extensions are another great exercise to build your quads. This is a seated exercise where you put your calves behind a bar and there’s a weight in front of it and you lift your legs straight up into a 180° angle, you can really squeeze, press an contract your muscles and really forced them to grow. This is a great exercise to do, it directly hits the quads and it will build a lot of muscle.
The next exercise is one that the hard-core guys may laugh at but the truly old-school guys would know the benefit of it. This exercise is called the lunge and you do it just like it sounds. You can do it with a barbell or with dumbbells. We actually suggest that you use dumbbells because it gives more mobility. You literally hold the barbell over your shoulders or the dumbbells at your side and you lunge out in front of your body as far as you can go and you lift back into your starting position. You alternate this between legs. You can also do it at different angles you can start off going straight, then you can go to a 45° angle and then back. It is an exercise that will build your quads and it will give you a little bit of glute interaction as well.
Try all of these different exercises put them to work, use standard bodybuilding intense workout and proper rest, proper diet and all the various tenets of weightlifting and you will have great results.
